Before You Go – Ngorongoro Crater Travel Tips

• Weather & Clothing: The crater rim is cool and can be chilly in the morning (especially June–August), so bring a light jacket or fleece. The crater floor warms up by midday, so dress in layers.

• Wildlife Viewing: Animals are most active early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Bring binoculars and a camera with extra batteries or memory cards.

• Sun Protection: Even on cooler days, the sun at high altitude can be intense. Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are essential.

• Altitude: The crater rim sits at about 2,200 meters (7,200 feet) above sea level, so the air is thinner. Take it easy if you’re not used to higher altitudes.

• Facilities: There are designated picnic spots and restroom facilities inside the crater, but services are limited—carry your own drinking water and snacks.

• No Off-Road Driving: To protect the delicate ecosystem, vehicles must stay on designated roads.

• Wildlife Safety: Always remain inside the vehicle during game drives. Even seemingly calm animals can be dangerous.
