Overview

A Unique Wildlife Encounter: Day Trip to Serval Wildlife from Zanzibar

Discover Tanzania's wild side in just one day with a visit to Serval Wildlife, an intimate and ethically run sanctuary nestled in the stunning Siha District between Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru. This experience is ideal for those with limited time who still wish to engage deeply with Africa’s majestic animals, without the need for a full-scale safari.

A Scenic Journey from Zanzibar

Start your adventure with a short flight from Zanzibar to KIA or Arusha. From there, it's a picturesque drive of less than an hour to the sanctuary, situated approximately 45 km from Arusha and 30 km from Moshi.

Immersive Wildlife Experience

Upon arrival, guests are warmly received by a team of dedicated conservation experts. Your visit begins with a briefing that outlines the sanctuary’s mission: to protect, rehabilitate, and educate about Africa’s wildlife. You’ll then embark on a guided walk through the reserve where you'll have opportunities to:

  1. Hand-feed or stroll beside towering giraffes
  2. Observe serval cats, lions, hyenas, zebras, and more in a spacious, naturalistic habitat
  3. Gain insights into animal behavior, conservation, and the local ecosystem
  4. Capture breathtaking photos with Mount Kilimanjaro as your backdrop

This isn’t a conventional safari — it’s a controlled, ethical environment where human-animal interaction is safely managed and animal welfare comes first.

Important Things to Know Before You Go;

  • Booking in Advance
  • Serval Wildlife operates with limited capacity to ensure a peaceful environment for the animals and a high-quality visitor experience.

  • It's strongly recommended to book your visit ahead of time, especially during peak travel seasons (June–October and December–February).

    • Best Time to Visit
    • Mornings are ideal — cooler temperatures mean the animals are more active, and the light is perfect for photography.

    • Avoid the hottest part of the afternoon (midday), particularly in the dry season.

      • Weather & Clothing
      • The Siha District sits at a higher altitude than Zanzibar, so it’s cooler. Mornings and evenings can be chilly.

      • Wear layered clothing and choose neutral colors (avoid bright red, blue, or white, which can agitate some animals).

      • Comfortable walking shoes are essential.

        • Health & Safety
        • The sanctuary is safe, and interactions are always supervised.

        • Basic first aid is available on-site.

        • You don’t need special vaccinations to visit the reserve itself, but it’s wise to check yellow fever or malaria precautions for Tanzania overall.

          • Ethical Considerations
          • Serval Wildlife emphasizes animal welfare. You won’t see performances or forced interactions.

          • Feeding and contact are limited to select species (e.g., giraffes) and are designed to be safe and enriching for the animals.

          • Accessibility
          • The site is family-friendly, and the walking paths are manageable.

          • Let staff know in advance if you have mobility needs — they may be able to assist.
