The 5-day Kilimanjaro Marangu Route is ideal for trekkers who want to reach Africa’s highest peak (5,895m) in a shorter time. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route”, it is the only route offering hut accommodations with beds and dining halls, making it more comfortable than camping routes.
You’ll pass through different climate zones — from rainforest to arctic conditions — while enjoying stunning views of Mawenzi, Kibo, and the surrounding landscapes.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Marangu Gate (1,840m) – Mandara Hut (2,700m)
Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
After breakfast in Moshi/Arusha, you’ll be driven to Marangu Gate where registration and briefing will take place. Your trek begins through the dense rainforest, filled with giant ferns, moss-covered trees, colorful birds, and the chance to spot black-and-white colobus monkeys. The air is humid and the trail is scenic, with waterfalls along the way. You’ll arrive at Mandara Hut for dinner and overnight. Short evening walks to Maundi Crater (optional) provide beautiful views over Kenya and the lush forest canopy.
Accommodation: Mandara Hut (wooden huts with bunk beds)
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Day 2: Mandara Hut (2,700m) – Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Distance: 12 km (7 miles)
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Leave the rainforest behind as the trail climbs steadily through heath and moorland. You’ll see giant groundsels, lobelias, and other unique alpine plants. On clear days, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks rising above the clouds. The air becomes cooler and thinner as you gain altitude. Dinner and overnight are at Horombo Hut, a lively camp where climbers often exchange stories.
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 3: Horombo Hut (3,720m) – Kibo Hut (4,700m)
Distance: 10 km (6 miles)
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Today the landscape changes dramatically. You’ll cross the "saddle" — a vast, barren plateau between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The vegetation thins out and the terrain becomes rocky and dusty. This section can feel long and exposed under the sun, but the views of Mawenzi’s jagged peaks and the looming Kibo cone are unforgettable. At Kibo Hut, rest early and prepare your gear for the midnight summit attempt. Your guides will give a detailed briefing and check your readiness for the climb.
Accommodation: Kibo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4: Summit Day – Kibo Hut (4,700m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Distance: 16 km (10 miles)
Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
Habitat: Arctic (summit zone) & Moorland (descent)
This is the toughest and most rewarding day of your climb. You’ll wake up around midnight for a hot drink before beginning the slow, steady ascent in darkness. The climb to Gilman’s Point (5,681m) on the crater rim is steep and demanding, but reaching it at sunrise is breathtaking. From there, continue along the snowy crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Celebrate with photos at the famous signpost before descending back to Kibo for rest, then continue to Horombo Hut for your final overnight on the mountain.
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 5: Horombo Hut (3,720m) – Marangu Gate (1,840m) – Moshi/Arusha
Distance: 18 km (11 miles)
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland & Rainforest
After breakfast, begin your final descent. The trail takes you back through moorland and lush rainforest, where you may see monkeys and birds once more. At Marangu Gate, you’ll sign out and receive your summit certificate (Uhuru Peak or Gilman’s Point). Meet your driver and return to Moshi/Arusha for a hot shower, dinner, and celebration of your achievement.
